Orthodontic braces

Orthodontic Braces, as a “braces”, are devices used to help straighten teeth and correct bite alignment. Cases such as: underbite, overbite, crossbite, open bite and malocclusions are some typical cases in which braces are used.

METAL BRACES

Metal braces are the most common type of braces and can withstand most types of treatment. They are stainless steel and are sometimes used in combination with titanium. When initially attached they may be a little irritating to your gums, but patients normally get used to it. Cheeks and gums grow tough and adapt. These braces have a metal bracket with elastic (rubber band) ties holding the wire onto the metal brackets.  Elastic  (rubber bands) ties called ligatures  are usually available in multiple colors. With metal braces, you have the option of adding colored elastics (rubber bands) for a more unique and colorful smile.

CERAMIC BRACES

Ceramic braces are made of ceramic or plastic materials therefore less visible on your teeth than metal braces. They blend  in with most teeth and not very noticeable at a distance or in photos. They function in a similar manner to metal braces. But ceramic braces do have their limitations.  If you have severe problems, ceramic braces will not be used in many cases, because they may not be strong enough to withstand the forces of some types of treatment.

SELF-LIGATING BRACES

Self-ligating braces come with metal or ceramic braces. They are the same size as metal braces, but use a specialized clip in place of elastics to help the arch wire guide teeth into place. The clip helps reduce the amount of pressure being placed on the tooth, and require fewer adjustments because there are no elastics to replace. So self-ligating braces can complete treatment in a shorter time with less pain.

 LINGUAL BRACES

Lingual braces are placed behind your teeth, and are therefore virtually invisible to other people. Usually lingual braces are made of metal. The lingual braces can also irritate the tongue initially than with regular braces. Treatment can take a few months longer than traditional braces. If you have severe problems, or need certain types of appliances, lingual treatment may not be applicable.

INVISALIGN

Invisalign is a series of clear, removable teeth aligners . The aligners consist of strong plastic trays that are fabricated especially for you. The aligners are replaced every 2 weeks. They are indeed invisible. Invisalign braces are great for people who do not have severe problems. If your bite is not severely off and your teeth are not severely crooked, then invisalign would be a good choice. You would be able to get your teeth straightened without anyone seeing that you are wearing “braces”.
