Onlay – Inlay

What are Inlay and Onlay?

Inlay and Onlay are dental restorations made using CAD/CAM technology. In certain cases, inlay and onlay are a conservative alternative to full coverage dental crowns. Also known as indirect fillings, inlay  and onlay offer a well-fitting, stronger, longer lasting restorative solution for tooth decay or similar damage, as compared to the traditional dental filings. These restorations are beneficial from both an esthetic and functional point of view. Inlay and onlay are manufactured in our lab in-house with CAD/CAM technique for the exact fitted on your damaged tooth.

Inlay is used when the tooth has damage(s) on only one cusp (a cusp is an elevation on an occlusal surface of posterior teeth and canines).

Onlay is used when the tooth has damage(s) only more than one cusp.

The Benefits of Inlay and Onlay:

Preserve your  natural tooth: Inlay and onlay offer a conservative approach that preserves as much of your natural tooth as possible. They are most suitable for customers with minimal to moderate tooth decay that extends into a flossing area. They are excellent alternatives to full coverage crowns.

Esthetics: Inlay and onlay are not likely to discolor over time compared tooth-colored resin fillings. Composite fillings can shrink during the curing process, whereas inlay and onlay will not (ensuring a precise fit).

Easy Tooth Cleaning: Because the fit is tailored at all edges (made using CAD/CAM technology), your tooth can be clean more easily as compare to composite filings.

Tight Space Fulfillments: If you have a cavity between your teeth, consider an inlay rather than a direct composite filling. Inlays are better at sealing teeth to keep out bacteria; they are easy to clean, will not stain and offer exceptional longevity.

Strength and Stability: Inlay and onlay are extremely stable restorative solutions for the treatment of decay. The superior fit and durable material make inlays and onlay a stable choice that can strengthen a damaged tooth.

Protecting Weak Tooth: Onlay/inlay can protect the weak areas of the tooth. The procedure does not require the complete reshaping of the tooth.

Inlays and Onlay: The Procedure:

Typically, an inlay or onlay procedure is completed in two dental visits.

– First visit: do preparation the damaged tooth for onlay/inlay, such as polishing. A molded impression of the tooth is then taken and sent to our Lab in-house to manufacture the customized inlay or onlay.

Inlay and onlay can be made from gold, porcelain or resin materials. The difference is in the appearance of the finished restoration. A fitted, temporary inlay or onlay in the shape of the final restoration can be created during this visit to protect the tooth while the permanent restoration is being manufactured.

Our doctor will discuss with you the best type of inlay or onlay material for your tooth/teeth position. If esthetics is not a concern (for example, with back molars), gold is the best option. Porcelain inlay and onlay offer the best esthetics and are often used in the “smile line” areas. Resin materials may be the best option for people who grind their teeth and/or those with a misaligned bite (malocclusion).

– Second visit: the provisional temporary is removed and your permanent inlay or onlay is placed.

Inlay and onlay are extremely stable restorations. Our doctor will check all margins to ensure a smooth fit with tight adjacent contacts. Your dentist will also check your bite to ensure that there are no occlusion-related problems affecting the margins of the restoration. Once fitted, the inlay or onlay is bonded onto the tooth and the margins are polished.
