How to take care of brace
Taking care of the braces yourself is no less important than the quality of the doctors’ treatment, in order to keep your teeth healthy but still looking good. Below is a list of how to take care of your braces during the treatment and also after it has been completed.
1. During the treatment
+ How to relieve pain from braces
Feeling the pain during the first time of the treatment is inevitable. Holding warm saline in your mouth is one effective solution; psychological methods such as listening to music, reading books or focusing on other works would also help you to ‘forget the pain’. If the pain does not go away, please visit or ask your doctor whether painkillers are required. Do not try to tolerate the pain as it might harm your neural system.
+ Oral hygiene during the treatment
Patients should be prepared for the responsibility that comes along with having braces. It is important not to let the food be trapped on the braces or the springs, and also not to change the structure of the braces after the cleaning process. Ask the doctors for instructions on how to brush your teeth or to use dental floss correctly. For further details on how to brush your teeth or to use dental floss, please click here.
+ How to eat during the treatment
Other than the pain, being on ‘diet’ is another challenge whilst having braces. Food that is too hard – crunchy, too hot or too cold, too sweet or sticky such as chewing gum, ice, hard types of nut (peanuts, cashews, etc.) should be avoided. For hard and crunchy food that is good for your health such as carrots, apples, etc you should chop it to small pieces first to prevent strong force acting on your teeth.
+ Pay attention to the braces and the strings
No matter how careful you are during the treatment, sometimes the braces and the strings still get dislocated, bent or even broken. Please visit the doctors to get immediate attention. If your braces are dislocated, you can use a clean swab to put it back to the correct order. In case it does not work, put a wet piece of cotton in the deviated area to prevent it from getting worse. If any part of the brace fall out, please also visit your doctor to get immediate attention.
+ Prevent strong force acting on your teeth
Playing sports or doing exercises are likely to have a direct impact on your teeth. Such activities should be avoided during the treatment, and protective tools should be used at all time. When an accident happens that has a direct impact on your teeth, please check whether your braces are affected and visit the doctor immediately for further details.
2. After the treatment
After removing the braces, wearing the retainer is necessary in most cases to maintain the result of the treatment. There are many types of retainers to be selected according to your needs, following the doctor’s advice. For details on different types of retainer, please click here. Please be noted, in any case please do not hesitate to contact your doctor to get the best advice from the specialist.
